# Planetary Base Building Competition

edited October 2017 in General #1
Hey guys, we haven't done any kind of competitions in a really long time now, so I thought I'd start one. If you would like to ask about a faction or see their style I would recommend asking in our Discord server! The winner will be the person who best captures what a planetary base from one of these factions would look in addition to factors like the overall visuals of the base, functionality, and lag.

The Rules

- The thing you build must be built on a planet and resemble a base used by a faction of your choosing.
- Players may submit up to 3 bases for the competition.
- You may build the base on any spacebuild map or planet.
- All entries must be posted as attachments to a post in this thread.
- All entries must come with at least one screenshot or video to show the base.
- All entries must follow the submission format detailed below.
- All entries must be created for a faction listed below.
- All entries must be submitted before 12PM PST on October 7th, 2017.

The Factions

The decrepit remains of a once large and prosperous conglomerate of scientific groups, the Advanced Development and Research Institutes or ADARI seek to continue their legacy of (mostly) peaceful scientific advancement. While they are small and lacking resources they are easily the most technologically advanced group in the known universe barring perhaps the highly secretive Spectral Directorate. Their origins are largely unknown, however, they suddenly appeared approximately 25 years before the BA Incursion.

Rumors in the area around the systems now inhabited by the ADARI say that they suddenly appeared without warning in a fashion similar to the BA, speaking a completely unknown language and wielding technologies that seemed like magic to the local inhabitants. However, unlike the havoc brought by the appearance of the Bereavement Advocates, the ADARI have peacefully maintained the scientific growth of themselves and their new neighbors.

Almost every base built by the ADARI is scientific in nature, be it for testing a new weapon, or simply testing a new flavor of Space Mix. They tend to be filled with many advanced pieces of technology, along side hidden piles of Space Mix to snack on when hungry. A color often associated with the ADARI is RGBA(0, 148, 255, 255), but their bases rarely use any faction colors and are built with functionality in mind.

The Bereavement Advocates are not native to our universe - they arrived here by a grave misfortune, and now pose the greatest threat this galaxy has ever seen.

The B.A are a motley alliance of various subfactions, each with their own methodlogy and technology and all united under the BA name. Catapulted to our universe via a mishap with an ADARI prisoner, they now seek to repair their grand flagship, the Eversor, with the resources and even harvested populations of our worlds in order to enable it to return them to their home galaxy.

The Bereavement Advocates show no mercy to this galaxy's citizens; all factions are merely obstructions to their grand harvest. Swift and brutal in combat, utilizing whatever of their own alien technology they brought with them from their home, they are a force that only a galaxy united can hope to stand against.

The structures built by the BA tend to vary greatly in nature and looks due to the large number of groups that make up their ranks. The BA tend to reuse the bodies of civilians for many purposes, including the creation of biocomputers from the corpses of the dead, grinding them into food for their livestock, and the living are repurposed as slave labor for various projects. Some bases will be constructed out of the remains of downed ships, while others will be constructed from the ground up in the style of the subfaction constructing the base. Some members enjoy seeing different shades of red, so red lighting or "paint" tends to be common. Other members have grown fond of rainbows for some reason, despite the faction's emphasis on cruelty.

Spectral Directorate
The Spectral Directorate (Commonly referred to as "The Directorate", or "SD") is a secretive organization that prefers subterfuge, propaganda, and information control over direct conflict. Its public directive is to cultivate lesser factions, and disrupt major factions through political, financial, and technological influence. A galaxy where one group holds all the power is useless to the Directorate.

Tendrils of the Directorate extend throughout the galaxy, carefully nudging events to align with their underlying plans. What those plans are, however, is an enigma to those outside its inner sanctum, and any unexplained SD activity is likely in pursuit of this mystery. Benevolence one minute, malevolence the next, if there's Spectral activity in your sector, best to keep your head down.

Directorate outposts are very low profile, almost resembling a dark, metal fungoid mass growing on the surface of the land, usually tucked against a hill or inside a canyon. Larger bases or bases designed to house crew avert this look as more standard structures such as cooling towers and windowed corridors come into prominence, but still retain a strange, foreboding appearance, owing to the curved, bulbous surfaces optimized to redirect enemy sensor scans, and the tall, jagged spines of the graviton condenser towers usually seen emerging from around the center of the outpost's power core. Spectral outposts, by their design, also sometimes incorporate elements from the materials they grew from.

Transhumanist Collective
A relatively small group that has recently started gaining an abnormal amount of traction in a galaxy being watched by the Spectral Directorate, the Transhumanist Collective wishes for all races to become one with technology. Many of their members are peaceful members of society that only wish for the advancement of all races, while others are simply infatuated with cybernetics and mechanical advancement.

However, not all within the Collective are of the same opinion, and some of the more extremist members have become twisted with a cultish idolization of the recently discovered PN crystals. These crystals are capable of self-reproduction by feeding upon other materials, however, they are also known to cause a strange madness within many lifeforms to further their expansion across continents, worlds, and solar systems. When used in a properly contained environment they can be used to provide massive amounts of energy relatively easily, however, they are not easily tamed, and hardly understood.

For the most part the Collective inhabits abandoned cities where there were once large factories for producing cybernetic enhancements. They patch up the existing buildings and factories and bring the city back to an operational state so they can spread their message to more people, by illegally implanting various cybernetic enhancements into them. Some of the more extreme members have taken to living in cities that were infested with PN crystals, where some will allow themselves to become one with the crystals. Some members have chosen to use common colors with other groups, a common color is RGBA(0, 127, 70, 255)

The Prize
The winner will be given the choice of one of the following games:
- Eterium

I have added the Spectral Directorate building description to the post, but not all of it would fit. Here is the uncut version for anyone interested:
To construct their land-based outposts, the Directorate launch a 'seed' pod, two meters in diameter, from a industrial-designated Spectral spacecraft. Upon impact with the planet, the seed deploys its internal cargo of nanocytes, and using materials from the surrounding environment, these nanocytes swiftly self-assemble a suitable outpost, then enter a low-power state until required again.

The constructions the nanocytes produce are low profile, first spreading out over the area the outpost will require, then extending tendrils underground to obtain further mineral resources, and to obtain geothermal power if the selected environment supports it. Substructures pre-programmed into the nanocytes, such as halls, landing docks, reactors, and factories, are then extruded up from the nanocyte mass to form the main body of the outpost. Advanced algorithms are used in construction to maximize output efficiency for the outpost and minimize sensor cross-section and any emissions that could lead to the outpost's detection. Final elements such as artificial gravity and life support (if required) are then added, and the outpost is ready to operate, either automatically or crewed.

As a result, Directorate outposts are very low profile, and when they can be clearly seen, almost resemble a dark, metal fungoid mass growing on the surface of the land, usually tucked against a hill or inside a canyon. Larger bases or bases designed for a full time live crew avert this look as more standard structures such as cooling towers and windowed corridors come into prominence, but still retain a strange, foreboding appearance, owing to the curved, bulbous surfaces optimized to redirect enemy sensor scans, and the tall, jagged spines of the graviton condenser towers usually seen emerging from around the centre of the outpost's power core. In the case of very large outposts, lightning can sometimes be seen flickering from the biggest of these towers to various capacitor domes around the base. Spectral outposts, by their design, also sometimes incorporate elements from the materials they grew from, such as a slight crust of rock around the initial base of an asteroid outpost, or a lava-based geothermal plant connected to an outpost on a volcanic planet.
